Daily GK Update 25-March 2017

1. Government has notified that Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), a statutory advisory body under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF) will now be permanently chaired by a senior MoEF official.



2.Union Government is going to launch Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) scheme for providing physical aids and assisted-living devices for senior citizens belonging to BPL category.
It is the first-of-its-kind Central Sector Scheme (CCS) in India, to be fully funded by the Central Government. It is expected to benefit 5,20,000 Senior Citizens.



3. Indian-origin British director Gurinder Chadha has been honoured with the 2017 Sikh Jewel Award for 2017 for her immense contribution to British cinema.



4.Veteran actor Anupam Kher will be honoured with the Kala Ratan Award by Vice President Hamid Ansari.

9.The term USHUS-II that was in the news recently refers to -Submarine Sonar System.
The Union Minister of Defence, Finance and Corporate Affairs Arun Jaitley on 24 March 2017 handed over the following three naval systems to the Indian Navy at a ceremony held in New Delhi.
i. USHUS-II Submarine Sonar
ii. Directing Gear for Hull Mounted Sonar Array
iii. RLG based Inertial Navigation System for Ship Applications (INS-SA).



10.The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved winding up of CHBL  and ICBL recently. Both of these organizations were engaged in  Renewable Energy Sector
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on 23 March 2017 gave is approval for closure/winding up of CREDA HPCL Biofuel Ltd (CHBL) and IndianOil - Chhattisgarh Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA) Biofuels Limited (ICBL).

16. After making Aadhaar mandatory for filing income tax returns and applying for a Permanent Account Number (PAN), the government has moved to make Aadhaar-based e-KYC (know your customer) mandatory for mobile phone connections.


17.The External Affairs Ministry and the department of posts announced the opening of a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) at Nellore in Andhra Pradesh



18.The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) will be reorganized for the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime and will be renamed as the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) following Parliamentary approval.



19.Fortune Magazine released their fourth annual ranking of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders 2017 on March 23, 2017. ii. State Bank of India’s Chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya has been ranked 26 among 50 leaders while Indian­origin physician Raj Panjabi, founder and CEO of Last Mile Health, have been placed at 28th position
.
With this, Bhattacharya has become the only Indian corporate leader to be featured on the list. The list has been topped by Theo Epstein President, Baseball Operations in Chicago Cubs.



20.The 105th session of Indian Science Congress (ISC) will be hosted by Osmania University, Hyderabad during January 3-7, 2018. 



21. Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has broken the record for most wickets in a single Test season, taking his 79th this season during the Dharamsala Test against Australia. 
Ashwin went past South African pacer Dale Steyn, who had claimed 78 wickets in 12 Tests in 2007-08. 




22 After e-commerce site Amazon was barred from selling products with the Indian Flag on them in January, the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) on Wednesday issued a fresh directive “to ensure strict compliance of the provisions contained in the Flag Code of India, 2002.” 


23 Synlight is the largest collection of film projector spotlights ever assembled in one room, and scientists in Germany are turning them all on at once in the pursuit of efficient and renewable energy.
This experiment involving the world’s “largest artificial sun” is taking place in Jülich, a town located 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Cologne, and it was designed by scientists from the German Aerospace Center (DLR).



24.As on March 15, Andhra Pradesh had linked 87.73 per cent of its Jan-Dhan accounts with Aadhaar numbers. This was followed by Tripura at 87.08 per cent and Telangana 83.56 per cent.

32.New Delhi based Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has commissioned a 250 MW coal­based thermal power unit at North East’s largest coal based power plant Bongaigaon Thermal Power Station (TPS) in Assam on March 23, 2017.
