About Nari Shakti Puraskar

• Union Government confers Nari Shakti Puraskar every year on eminent women and institutions in recognition of their service towards the cause of women empowerment.
• The Nari Shakti Awards were initiated in the year 1999 and the guidelines were reframed in the year 2015.
• The Ministry of Women and Child Development announces these national level awards.
• The award is open to all Indian Institutions, organisations and individuals. 
• The WCD Ministry invites nominations from the State Governments, concerned Central Ministries, NGOs, universities, private and public sector undertakings (PSUs) working for empowerment of women. 
• In exceptional cases, the Selection Committee may also, suo moto, recommend a person or institution for the award with justification.
• The final selection of the awardees is made by the National Selection Committee which takes into account the recommendations of the Screening Committee
.


About MH370

• The plane was carrying 239 people including 12 crew members.
• It had completed 53460 flight hours and 7525 take-offs and landings.
• The pilot had a record of more than 18000 flying hours and had been employed with the airlines since 1981.
• The air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane almost an hour after its take off.
• The flight was last detected on the military radar near the island of Pulau Perak at the northern end of the Strait of Malacca.
• Though no distress signal or message was sent from the plane, reports suggest that it attempted to turn back from its scheduled path.
• The weather conditions were also reported to be good.
• The plane’s disappearance launched one of the largest-ever international search efforts in the area over the South China Sea, Gulf of Thailand and the Indian Ocean.
• Around 120000 sq km area of the seabed has been searched using advanced underwater drones and sonar equipment.
• A flaperon from the plane was discovered on Reunion Island more than 3700 km away from the main search site in July 2015.

About Viola Davis
• A graduate of Julliard School, Davis began her acting career through theatre and won an Off-Broadway Theater Award in 1999 for her performance as Ruby McCollum in a play 'Everybody's Ruby'.

Women Empowerment Schemes of Narendra Modi Government.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme
• The scheme was launched (in January 2015) by the government in the backdrop of declining the Child Sex Ratio (CSR). As per the 2011 census, the CSR reduced from 927 in 2001 to 918 in 2011, which is an alarming trend.
One Stop Centre Scheme
• One Stop Centres (OSC) support women affected by violence,physical, sexual, emotional, psychological and economic abuse,in private and public spaces, within the family, community and in the workplace.
Women Helpline Scheme
• This scheme was launched by the by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development on 1 April 2015 to provide 24 hours immediate and emergency response to women affected by violence.
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana
• To provide free LPG connections to women from below poverty line (BPL).
• Under the scheme, a financial support of 1600 rupees will be provided for each LPG connection to the BPL households.
• This is for the first time the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has involved in implementing a welfare scheme benefiting crores of women belonging to the poorest households.

Mahila E-Haat
• The Ministry of Women and Child Development launched Mahila E-Haat, a bilingual portal on 7 March, 2016.
• This is a unique direct online marketing platform. It leverages technology for supporting women entrepreneurs, SHGs and NGOs.

The Rise of Sivagami: Book 1 of Bahubali 

  • It is the first book in the series Bahubali: Before the Beginning.
  • The plot of the book is considered as the prequel to the acclaimed movie Baahubali: The Beginning, which was released in July 2015.
  • As per the author, it is a tale of intrigue, power, revenge and betrayal. The revelations in The Rise of Sivagami will grip the reader and not let go.




Key highlights of the analysis by the Financial Time
  • China’s GDP surpassed that of the European Union’s in 2011 at market exchange rates. However, its banking system did not take over the top spot until the end of 2016.
  • That lag was stimulated by an extraordinary increase in bank lending since 2008 when the Chinese government unleashed aggressive monetary and fiscal stimulus to soften the impact of the global crisis.
  • Data show that Chinese bank assets hit USD 33 trillion at the end of 2016, versus USD 31 trillion for the eurozone.
  • Also, the value of China’s banking system is more than 3.1 times the size of the country’s annual economic output, while it is 2.8 times for the eurozone and its banks.
  • It was also noted that, unlike in developed markets, Chinese local governments have relied heavily on bank loans to finance infrastructure.




Trade Mark Rules 2017



  • The new rules were released by Union Ministry of Commerce & Industry and will replace the erstwhile Trade Mark Rules, 2002.
  • Number of Trade Mark (TM) Forms have been reduced to 8 from 74.
  • The TM applications fee for online filing has been kept at 10% lower than that for physical filing to promote e-filing.


 Bharuch Bridge
  • The 1.4 kilo metre extradosed bridge is located across River Narmada at Bharuch in Gujarat. 
  • The project has been completed in 34 months at a cost of Rs 380 crore.
  •  The bridge is 20.8 metre wide, with 14.5 metre carriageway and 3 metre footpath.
  •  It is supported on 9 pylons of 36 meter height on pile foundation of 1.5 metre  diameter.
  • The bridge will be lit by more than 400 light emitting diode (LED) lights.
  • The bridge is a part of National Highways Authority of India’s  project for six laning of Ahmedabad-Mumbai section of NH-8.
  •  This section of NH-8 will have state-of-the-art Highway Traffic Management System (HTMS), variable message sign boards, median plantation, traffic aid post, medical aid post and radio-frequency identification (RFID).
  •  Smart card swapping enabled infrastructure was put in place at the toll plaza of the bridge.



Tirtha Darshan Scheme

Under the scheme-

  • State government will bear the entire cost of the tour of senior citizens belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. 
  • In case of a couple, the expenses of the spouse belonging to BPL family will also be borne by the state government. 
  • They will also be able to take along an assistant.n case of senior citizens of non-BPL families, state government would bear only 70% of the cost. Senior citizens will be selected for the pilgrimage on the basis of lottery system.
  • Over 400 destinations can be visited. The maximum number of pilgrims will be only 250 every year. Selection of pilgrims will be made by a district committee headed by the deputy commissioner.

About Goods and Services Tax (GST) 


  • GST is proposed uniform indirect taxation regime throughout the country. 
  • It will merge most of the existing indirect taxes into single system of taxation.
  •  It is consumption based tax levied on the supply of Goods and Services which will be levied and collected at each stage of sale or purchase of goods or services based on the input tax credit method. 
  • GST will be a comprehensive indirect tax on manufacture, sale and consumption of goods and services throughout India. 
  • It was approved by The Constitution (One Hundred and First Amendment) Act, 2016.

About SWATHI -


  • Developed by - DRDO
  • Range -50 km (which brings all artillery guns presently in service worldwide under its coverage).
  • Performs two roles -Weapon Location Mode for enemy Artillery and Direction of Own artillery Fire (DOOAF) Mode for Artillery. 
  • Provides quick, automatic and accurate location of all enemy weapons like mortars, shells and rockets firing within its effective zone of coverage. 
  • The WLR has been a critical requirement of the Indian Army and in the aftermath of the Kargil conflict it was imported from the US in 2002 to fill critical needs.

About Indus Waters Treaty (IWT)-


  •  IWT is a water-distribution treaty between India and Pakistan. 
  • It deals with sharing of water of six rivers — Beas, Ravi, Sutlej, Indus, Chenab and Jhelum between the two countries. 
  • It was signed by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and President of Pakistan Ayub Khan on September 19, 1960. 
  • As per treaty, control over three eastern rivers —Ravi, Beas and Sutlej was given to India. While control over three western rivers — Indus, Jhelum and Chenab was given to Pakistan. 
  • It allows India to use only 20% of the water of Indus river, which flows through it first, for irrigation, power generation and transport.
